A client in Carlsbad sent us their old aerial reel last spring and asked why it looked "soft" on Instagram. The footage was gorgeous — 4K, smooth gimbal, shot right over the lagoon at sunset. A 9:16 frame is roughly 2.4 times taller than it is wide. That ratio changes what reads as a good composition. A wide establishing shot that looks balanced in 16:9 turns into a thin strip of ocean with dead sky above and dead water below when you force it vertical. The eye has nowhere obvious to land.

Vertical footage rewards vertical subjects: a lighthouse, a cliff face, a building facade, a person standing. It punishes horizontal ones: a coastline stretching left to right, a wide parking lot, a football field. If your subject is inherently horizontal — which describes a lot of SoCal geography — you compensate by flying closer, lower, and slower so the vertical motion (rising, descending, orbiting) does the work instead of the horizontal spread.

This is also why native vertical capture beats cropped vertical almost every time. Most current DJI drones (Mini 4 Pro, Air 3, Mavic 3) let you shoot true vertical through the app, recording the sensor's full vertical resolution instead of a slice of a horizontal frame. That's the difference between a crisp 2160x3840 file and a cropped, upscaled 1080x1920 file that falls apart the second someone taps to zoom in.

Framing for a 9:16 Frame Before You Ever Launch

Negative space works differently too. In landscape, empty sky on either side of a subject reads as breathing room. In vertical, empty space above and below a subject reads as wasted frame, because there's so much less width to fill in the first place. Keep the subject occupying 40-60% of the vertical frame height for most shots — anything smaller looks lost.

Shoot 4K at minimum, even though the final deliverable is often compressed down to 1080x1920 by Instagram or TikTok's own processing. The extra resolution gives you room to stabilize in post and punch in slightly without visible softness — critical because vertical crops from any wider framing eat resolution fast.

Frame rate depends on the cut. For narrative b-roll — a brand story, a location reveal — shoot 24fps to match a cinematic feel. For anything with motion that needs smoothing in post (surf breaking, cars on PCH, foot traffic in the Gaslamp Quarter), shoot 30fps or 60fps so you have slow-motion options without stutter.

Set your ND filter for the light, not the app's suggestion. Midday San Diego sun without an ND6 or ND8 on a Mini 4 Pro will force a shutter speed too fast for smooth motion, giving you a strobing, stuttery look that reads badly on vertical, where every flaw is magnified by the tighter framing. We keep a set of ND4 through ND32 filters in the case and check the histogram before every flight, not just the exposure meter.

Flight Patterns Built for SoCal Locations

Fast reveals and sweeping fly-throughs are a landscape habit. In vertical, slow reads better. A 3-5 mph orbit around a subject — a surfboard shaper's workshop in Encinitas, a rooftop bar in the Gaslamp — gives viewers time to actually see what's on screen before the next cut. Fast lateral movement in a tall, narrow frame just blurs.

Editing: Reframe, Don't Just Crop

Even with native vertical capture, you'll sometimes get footage shot horizontal that a client wants repurposed — old aerial libraries, previous shoots, stock. When that happens, don't apply a blind center crop. Reframe manually, shot by shot, tracking the subject through the clip so it stays centered as camera movement shifts its position in frame.

In Premiere or DaVinci Resolve, this means keyframing the position or using tracking-assisted reframe tools rather than a static crop. It's slower — expect 10-15 minutes per clip instead of 30 seconds — but it's the difference between usable footage and a client asking why the building is cut in half.

Build margin into new shoots so you never have to choose. Fly wide enough that a subject sits comfortably inside a vertical crop with roughly 20% extra space on each side. That one habit means a single flight produces a usable 9:16 cut for social and a 16:9 cut for the website or a paid ad, without a second trip out with the drone.

Mistakes We See Constantly on SoCal Brand Accounts

The most common one is the horizon tilt. In landscape, a slightly off-level horizon is forgivable, sometimes even stylistic. In vertical, with so little width to distract the eye, a tilted horizon over the ocean is the first thing anyone notices, and it reads as sloppy, not artistic. Use the drone's horizon overlay and double-check it in post with a grid.

The second is opening on a wide static shot. Vertical video is a phone-in-hand medium, watched at arm's length while someone decides in under two seconds whether to keep scrolling. Open on movement or a close, specific detail, then pull back to the drone shot as the second or third cut.

The third is ignoring safe zones. Every platform stacks UI over the top and bottom 15-20% of a vertical frame — captions, sound credits, like and comment buttons. A key subject or text overlay placed in those zones gets covered. Frame with that dead space built in from the start rather than discovering it after publishing.

Legal and Safety Realities for San Diego Drone Shoots

Any commercial drone flight — meaning footage used for a business, a client, or a paid promotion — requires an FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate. This isn't a formality. Treat vertical drone footage as its own line item in the shoot plan, not an afterthought pulled from the horizontal reel. Our pre-production checklist includes a vertical shot list separate from the horizontal one, because the subjects, distances, and flight patterns genuinely differ.

On set, we shoot every vertical setup twice: once at the planned framing, once slightly wider for safety margin. That costs maybe 90 extra seconds per setup and has saved multiple deliveries when a client wanted a square Instagram grid post pulled from the same aerial footage after the fact.

In post, build a vertical-specific template in your editing software with safe-zone guides burned into the viewer, not just referenced from memory. It keeps every editor on a team framing the same way, and it catches horizon and safe-zone mistakes before a client ever sees a rough cut.

For a boutique hotel client near Solana Beach, the brief was a 20-second vertical reel for Instagram and TikTok promoting an ocean-view suite.
